The Un-Bats-Man « Result #1 Yesterday at 12:05am »
More than once in the last year an oddball unlicensed Batman figure has shown up on eBay, the subject of much speculation, interest and sometimes derision(due in no small part to its outsized price tag!):
Personally, I think it may be exactly what the seller claims it is- a vintage TV-era Batman knockoff by a company called Red Box Toys -and whether the fact that nobody else seems ever to have seen one like it weighs in favor of that assumption... Well, it's anybody's guess, I guess.
At any rate, once it was drawn to my attention I was intrigued by it like any Batfan and figure geek would be. Lacking the wherewithal or the resources to purchase such an arcane example, I decided to make one of my own. And here it is now! A non-talking talking G.I. Joe stands in for the blow-molded Red Box character, dressed in a few knockoff pieces and some hastily crafted Bat-ornamentation:
I love the off-color utility belt pockets- the simple red/black outfit reminds me first of the TV Batmobile and then of some of the vintage 'non-standard' Batman figures from Japan or South America -and the 'non-Batman' emblem which obviously is a Batman emblem! Here's a slightly different version with a more 'standard' yellow utility belt and a smaller Batmask cut down from a too-small first try at the Commando Cody-style Bat-helmet:
I love a little side project like this every so often, a quick fix makes me feel like I've accomplished something without weeks or months of trial-and-error and confabbing with this party or that.
Finally, here's another version of the smaller Batmask which incorporates round goggle eyepieces making him look even more Gotham By Gaslight. A real 'steampunk' looking Bat-fellow!

Same here, I knew of Johnny and Jane and Chief Cherokee and Thunderbolt, that was about it. I knew about the Knights once I got into my toy collecting but I remember when I really started re-collecting Johnny I was totally surprised by the Vikings. I'd never heard of them and they are very cool.
I did have an original Jed at one time and I can't recall how or where I got him. He had no scout accessories with him so I dressed him with a few cavalry pieces I had at the time. Then like a dolt I decided to trade off and sell the Marx men- probably in a down turn of employment and needed the cash! -and Jed went with the rest of them. Of course, these days trying to buy one is a real task. Well, like everything else, he'll turn up one day. I hope so anyway!

Classic G.I. Joe / Action Man Gloves « Result #5 on Dec 20, 2009, 7:47pm »
I think a development as big as this deserves it's own space, drumroll please.....
Here's a strange evil genius cobbled together for the express purpose of having something other than a naked doll model my new gloves for G.I. Joe's 'classic hands'. With a long, wide gauntlet that will be perfect in white for Life Guards, Blue & Royals and other dress uniforms, they can also be trimmed to any length and made in other colors for other figures; silver for an astronaut, natural latex for field medics, black for high voltage protection, you name it!
15.00 per pair, just pick your color!
Uh, thank you, King Bron! Here are the same gloves in white:
King Bron's simpleton half-brother, Billy Joe Whitecap, models the long white gloves. Hey there, Billy Joe, let's see you pantomime a crab holding a sandwich:

I just got my Garrett not too long ago from a local toy scoutin' buddy. He seems to find Marx more often than I do and he's not really into them. Now if he could just come up with Zeb Zachary and Jed Gibson for me yet...!
I'll LYK if another Sheriff Garrett happens to come along, fer sure.

Yeah, some of those poor Johnnies haven't fared too well over the years, just fall to pieces like an old crust of bread. I read somewhere that they are better having been played with than 'mint in box' because the oil from oily little kids' hands actually seeped into the plastic and kept it from getting brittle. Or so I heard...

The 40 ann ACTION MAN sets do look cool and there are a few i'd like to get like the German staff commander and German tank commander, When i was a kid the miltary GI-JOEs were long gone and only the AT JOEs were aviable so those are the ones i really like but you want a muscle body Joe or eagle eye Joe you are better off buying the ACTION MAN verson as they have held together over the years unlike the ones from the US
Re: Action Man / G.I. Joe « Result #9 on Dec 20, 2009, 6:05pm »
I gotta tell ya, I'm more familiar with the GI Joe stuff, of course, but there's a big Joe and Action Man display at a nearby antique market- Cackleberry Farms, by name, and Joe Depot is the Joe dealer -and there are a LOT more AM sets I'd be interested in owning than Joe stuff. Space Ranger, astronaut, motorcycle cop, to name just a few. But then my mum was not in favor of the miltary theme so I never had but one Joe as a boy and as I recall he was had secondhand so had no miltary uniforms or weapons.

Re: The Spider Man « Result #13 on Dec 16, 2009, 6:41pm »
I've got a line on some urethane rubber that might be just the ticket to re-creating some of the polyvinyl accessories like Spidey's venom tank strap and belts. It'll take some trial and error, I'm sure, with colorants and moldmaking for the stuff so stay tuned for news on that!
The fellows who used to make the repros of the spider and lots of other CA pieces have given it up, sad to say, and there's been no one to fill that gap. At one time I asked about acquiring molds from one of those guys but got no response and with so many projects of my own already unfinished I didn't really want to get into creating new molds for every piece and part.
Adding a loop to the Spiderman belt? You could easily create a makeshift loop from craft foam- one of my favorite 'quickie' materials -or some other flat material. Cut a circle with a narrow strip, punch the center of the circle and loop the strip around the belt, gluing the end to the back of the strip. That way it'll be like a slider on the belt, not pemanently attached so as to ruin the 'vintage' value.

Gene from Illinois is happified to have the Cartwright doll family complete at last:
"Adam was worth the wait!!!!! I have him riding with the rest of the boys in my western display case, and he looks fantastic! He matches the rest of the group perfectly, no one would ever guess he wasn't an original. Thanks again for a great addition to my collection."
